Menanam tanaman pada dinding terbukti dapat mengurangi suhu udara di dalam rumah, karena tanaman dapat menyerap panas, selain tentu hijaunya tanaman dapat menyegarkan pandangan. Inilah yang disebut green wall.

Umumnya, cara tanam di dinding menggunakan perangkat khusus. Sebuah kotak plastik khusus diisi dengan media tanam dan tanamannya, kemudian digantungkan pada dinding. Sistem pengairan pun ditambahkan agar tanaman dapat terus tercukupi nutrisinya.

Namun, cara tersebut cukup mahal. Karena itu, green wall semacam ini biasanya diterapkan di gedung-gedung perkantoran.

Ada cara menanami dinding yang lebih sederhana. Bahan bakunya pun banyak didapatkan di sekitar kita, yaitu kain wol tebal dan sekam. Berikut ini caranya:

1. Kain wol

Siapkan dua lembar kain wool (glasswool) masing-masing setebal 7 mm dan jahit menjadi satu tepiannya. Di salah satu permukaan wol dibuatkan sobekan-sobekan sehingga membentuk kantung. Di bagian bawah sobekan in harus dijahit kembali agar tanaman dapat ditempatkan di sini.

2. Jenis tanaman

Tanaman yang ditanam di sini dapat berupa tanaman menyebak atau merambat. Dengan begitu, dinding hijau akan cepat rimbun. Beberapa jenis tanamannya, antara lain sirih-sirihan, begonia, dracaena, polisias, epiprenum, serta peperomia. Jenis bromelia dan kriptantus juga dapat memberikan warna yang cantik.

3. Menumbuhkan akar

Sebelum dimasukkan ke dalam kantung, tanaman harus ditumbuhkan akarnya. Caranya adalah dengan memotong tanaman kemudian direndam ke dalam larutan penumbuh akar, lalu dibalut dengan sobekan rockwool.

4. Memindahkan tanaman

Setelah dua minggu dan berakar banyak, tanaman siap dipindahkan ke dalam kantung. Aturlah jenis tanaman untuk membuat pola tertentu pada dinding. Paduan warna juga dapat dimainkan antara tanaman berdaun hijau tua, hijau muda, kekuningan, atau kemerahan.

5. Rangka

Bobotnya yang lebih ringan dibandingkan cara biasa membuat lembaran glasswool dapat dipasang ke dinding menggunakan rangka sederhana, baik berbahan besi atau baja ringan.

6. Perawatan

Siramlah greenwall ini sekali sehari. Jika pupuk ingin ditambahkan, campurkan pupuk cair ke dalam air siraman.
